Phase 4
Children will be working on the following sounds. Children at this stage will also be revising their knowledge of the previous phases. Many words in the previous phases were monosyllabic (words with just one syllable.) In this phase children will be using their skills to explore polysyllabic words (words containing more than one syllable.)
Children will also explore how many vowels and consonants words contain. Children at this phase will develop their confidence to read words with a greater number of letters and graphemes. Children will be practising blending longer words with more sounds. Some useful terms are below:
CVC Words:
Words such as 'cat.' (Consonant, vowel, consonant.)
CCVC Words:
For example 'trim,' 'flat' and 'step. (Consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant.)
